The rock art of the Nilotic speakers

Nilotic speakers in Ethiopia, Kenya and northern Tanzania painted stylised representations of long-horned and short-horned cattle.

Alongside the cattle are a few depictions of shields and cattle brands. The images are all painted in red and/or white.

Groups such as the Samburu, Pokot, Turkana and Maasai still use many of the same brands and shield forms that we see depicted in the rock art. The brands are marks of ownership.
