The David Lewis-Williams collection is now available to view online.
Lewis-Williams is one of South Africa’s most well respected archeologists and his extensive collection of rock art is now available online for the public to view.
Lewis-Williams became interested in rock art while working in KwaZulu-Natal as a teacher. He went on to complete a doctorate in anthropology that is widely credited with changing the study of South African archaeology. He also established the Rock Art Research Unit at the University of the Witwatersrand, which went a long way to improving research into rock art in Southern Africa.
He is acknowledged as the researcher who cracked the code of San rock art, moving us from the colonialist understanding of rock art to a more ethnographic approach. The understanding he has developed has revealed the richness of one of the most complex and sophisticated arts.
